HUMBOLDT BAY
Client: PG&E
Location: Humboldt, CA
About the Project
Humboldt Bay Power Plant (HBPP), a Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), began decommissioning and demolishing its Unit 3 nuclear power plant. The decommissioning of HBPP required the removal of sub grade structures, which will require excavation below the water table. This required that the excavations be pumped to maintain safe environmental conditions during decommissioning activities. In order to release the water pumped from the excavations, a ground water treatment system needed to be installed.
Treatment
Clear Creek designed and constructed a 300 gpm treatment and filtration system using a series of vapor tanks, hydrocarbon removal systems and metals removal systems. Before the processed water is discharged, it is monitored to ensure it meets the Attachment A-NPDES Permit No. CAS000002 General Permit for Stormwater Discharges Associated with Construction (CGP) Active Treatment Systems (ATS) discharge limits and water quality objectives and to demonstrate that U.S. Nuclear Regulatory limits for radioactive effluents are in compliance.
